General Information
Gamla Sangiovese was produced from Sangiovese and a small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon, all grown in the Golan Heights. The cool climate, rocky volcanic soil and high altitude are ideal conditions for growing this classic Tuscan grape variety. Aging in oak barrels balances the floral, wild berry and light earthy notes of this Sangiovese with nuances of spice and vanilla. Enjoy with steaks right off the grill or with pasta dishes rich in fresh herbs. To preserve the quality of the wine, this bottle should be stored on its side in a cool, dark place. Best served at 65-70°F

I previously reviewed the 2003 vintage, giving it a full 10 out of 10 rating. I just got my hands on a 2002 bottle. It rates almost the same as the 2003, but loses a few points in the flavor.

An interesting alternative to the standard cabs and merlots, lighter and with pronounced vanilla flavors. Would complement meat and other hearty but not too overpowering dishes.

This is a very good wine and an exceptional value. Its clear, deep, peachy garnet color is the visual first stop on a very interesting journey. With a heady, gravel to mildly musky aroma and an exciting viscous mouth, there is no denying this well balanced, earthy creation of Golan Heights Winery. It resembles those appealing Tuscan reds that could easily inspire thoughts of a quiet retreat to an old stone farmhouse in the Italian countryside, high in the hills, overlooking hundreds of miles of spectacular views roundabout. This is a wine to buy by the case rather than bottle. It is worth having while available. A wonderful treat. 90

Very nice aromas and flavors that almost taste like a real Chianti! The only problem is the heat: this wine has a kicking 14.5% alcohol, which does burn off with time, but is powerful while it's still around.

Probably the best Sangio in Israel because there is no competition. This wine has nice dried strawberry flavors and tart acidity. Needs tomato-based foods or grilled poultry.

Good wine with powerful aroma, deep purple hue and full body. Wasn't as balanced as I would have liked it to be but overall a good wine.

The 2001 bottle is rumored to have a coffeelike aftertaste. True that. This wine is a brute with a extremely well cultivated finish. If you are looking for more oak and smokiness in a wine, this one is it. Zesty, fruity, waiting to please!

Vibrant, vivacious, volcanic - these are but a few of the words which come to mind when I taste the Galma Sangiovese! Following suit in the Gamla tradition, the Sangiovese is a potent wine, dazzling in its spicy, fruity flavor, and full, bold body. The Sangiovese asserts itself with all the confidence and regality of a Mongolian warlord. Bravissimo, Signore Sangiovese!
