Yarden Merlot
Vintage 2004
Strong oak and vanilla notes that, while enjoyable, comes a little too close for my taste to overpowering the surprisingly light-bodied wine. To avoid the sediments present in the bottle, I recommend decanting after letting the bottle stand for a day. But don't air it out for too long! The wine tasted great immediately after opening, with fresh, vibrant acidity and a fascinating hint of honey in its flavor. But after two and a half hours in a decanter, the vibrancy was gone - it still paired great with food, but it wasn't so interesting as a stand-alone drink anymore.
Tierra Salvaje Sauvignon Blanc
Vintage 2011
The 2010 was great, but the 2011, with interesting tropical fruit notes (but still just as food-friendly as the 2010), may be even better. I simply cannot believe the quality of wine you get for the price. Between these two vintages, this has become my de facto house white.
