Carmel Shaal Late Harvest Gewurztraminer
Vintage 2004
This is a very nice dessert wine, concentrated and sweet. It has complex flavors, with apricots right upfront. I would not recommend it for the meal, but rather to be served with dessert. A very well-made bottle of wine.
Carmel Limited Edition
Vintage 2003
This is an outstanding bottle of wine. Made in the classic Bordeaux style, it has beautiful aroma, all ingredients are well balanced, and it concludes with a very nice, long finish. One of the top wines coming out of Israel today.
Yarden Chardonnay Odem
Vintage 2002
This is a nice bottle of Chardonnay, very well made. It is not too oaky, with nice fruit. I would recommend it.
Langer Tokaji Aszu 3 Puttonoyos
Vintage 2000
This is a well-made wine which, ultimately, I found lacking. At 3 Puttonoyos (which is basically a measure of sweetness in Tokaji wines)it is not very sweet, and is not as refined as, say, the French Sauternes or some Israeli dessert wines. An interesting wine, but, at this price, there are probably better options.
Recanati Reserve Merlot
Vintage 2002
This is a well-made bottle, from a good winery, but 2002 was not the greatest harvest in Israel. I recommend looking for later vintages, they are much better.
Recanati Chardonnay
Vintage 2005
This is a very nice bottle, with a lot of fruit and very little oak, much closer to a Burgundy than to a New World Chardonnay. A delicious bottle, and excellent relative value.
Porto Cordovero Ruby Port
Vintage 2004
This is the first Kosher Port, from the properties of a famous Port house, Taylor Fladgate. This is a Ruby Port, though, that is, the least complex kind of Port (lots of fruit, relatively simple, but well-made). I would recommend it, but anyone who is expecting a Tawny or a Vintage Port will be disappoined.
Recanati Merlot
Vintage 2004
This is a pleasant, relatively simple wine. It is well integrated, although I found it to be much sweeter that I would have expected. Overall, a good value for the money, and well recommended.
Recanati Syrah
Vintage 2003
I found this bottle to be a bit disappoining. It comes from a very good winery, and the Reserve version of this wine is a great bottle. This one, though, seemed out of balance.
Segal's Cabernet Sauvignon Unfiltered
Vintage 2002
This is a full-bodied wine, nicely integrated, with silky tannins and a nice finish. A very well-made bottle, it can stand up to some of the best Israeli cabs.
Barkan Pinotage Reserve
Vintage 2002
This is a nice wine, made from a grape that is very uncommon outside of South Africa. Here is an Israeli version, and it's easy-drinking, very fruit-forward, not very tannic, and well integrated. Definitely recommended.
Borgo Reale Moscato D'Asti
Vintage 2004
This is one of the better kosher Moscato d'Asti's out there. It is slightly less one-dimentional than some others, with a strong apple flavor throughout. Highly recommended.
Carmel Appellation Carignan Old Vines
Vintage 2004
A fine effort from Carmel, this one from a rather unexciting grape that generally produces mediocre results. This bottle, however, is made from old vines, and is quite refined, moderately tannic, and well-balanced, with a nice finish. A very nice alternative to the more traditional varietals.
Barons de Rothschild Edmond Benjamin Haut-Medoc
Vintage 2002
A nice Bordeaux, with a strong nose, complex taste, well-integrated tannins, and a moderately long finish. There are better kosher Bordeaux wines, but not many at this price.
Borgo Reale Primitivo
Vintage 2004
This is a nice bottle, with fully integrated tannins, good fruit, and high alcohol (although you don't feel it when drinking the wine). Primitivo is another name for Zinfandale, so the characteristics described above are not surprising. The wine is Mevushal, and therefore can be taken along to kosher restaurants. A nice bottle for the money, and recommended.
Alfasi Late Harvest Sauvignon Blanc
Vintage 2000
A great dessert wine! This is a blend of late harvest Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon, affected by Botrytus, or, in other words, the exact same blend as the great dessert wines of Sauternes (at a much better price). Sweet, complex, with many layers of taste, this one is clearly meant to be drunk after the main course, and can stand up to chocolate and other sweets. Highly recommended.
Valero Malbec
Vintage 2002
A simple wine, not bad, but not exciting. I am still waiting for a great kosher Argentinian Malbec, but this is not it.
Segal's Fusion Red
Vintage 2005
This is a young, fruity wine. It is not designed for aging or "heavy contemplation", but should work very well for chicken or light meats.
Bartenura Malvasia
Vintage 2005
This is a good wine for the "Moscato" crowd. It is very sweet, lightly frizzante, and low in alcohol. It is also mevushal, which makes it a good restaurant selection.
Galil Mountain Rose
Vintage 2005
This wine is stronger than I expected, less of a true Rose than a red wine with pink color. Less delicate and "fun" than some other Roses.
