How did Domaine du Castel Start?

Eli Ben Zaken emigrated from Milan to Israel in the 1970s and bought a small plot of land to realise his dream of working the land. Domaine du Castel began almost by chance when Eli planted a small plot of vines near the family house. He sent a bottle of his very first vintage to the head of Sotheby’s auction house in London and the excellent feedback prompted him to found his own boutique winery in the Judean Hills.

What is Domaine du Castel most known for?

Eli named his winery after the nearby Crusaders’ fortress which features on his labels and logo. Over the years Castel has gone from strength to strength and now produces exceptional Bordeaux-style kosher wines which age for up to 24 months in the French oak barrels which Eli personally imported to Israel. Since this is a boutique family-run winery, production levels remain extremely limited and a huge amount of care and passion goes into making each and every bottle.

Most Popular Wines from Domaine du Castel

    • Castel Grand Vin is a deeply-flavoured and powerful red wine which can equally age in the cellar for decades or be enjoyed now alongside hearty red meat dishes.

    • Blanc du Castel is a vibrant kosher Chardonnay which is fermented and matured in French oak barrels to add buttery and toasty notes to the ripe tropical fruit flavours.
