Kosherwine.com’s Tribute to Manischewitz Wine

"Man-O-Manischewitz, What a Wine!" Manischewitz has long been the iconic kosher wine, especially around passover time, for Jews living all over the US. Although we, at kosherwine.com, take tremendous pride in the rich and diverse state of kosher winemaking today, we felt the need to pay tribute to the very first kosher wine to earn a nationwide reputation amongst Jews and Gentiles alike: Manischewitz.

Where it all started

Manischewitz has been making kosher wines for over 60 years. In the early days the brand flourished thanks to successive waves of Jewish immigrants moving from Eastern Europe to New York and other East Coast cities. The winemakers made use of what was close to hand, namely the Concord grape which grew in upstate New York, and added sugar to boost the flavor profile. This was the start of kosher wine production on a massive scale, and today Manischewitz remains the biggest kosher wine brand in the US.

From start to finish the whole Manischewitz winemaking process is carried out under rabbinical supervision and certified as kosher by the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America. Significantly, all Manischewitz wines are also mevushal which ensures they remain kosher regardless of who handles the wine.

About the Wine

One of the most popular Manischewitz wines is the Concord Grape kosher wine which offers enticing rich fruit flavours and a pleasant sweetness on the palate. Like several other Manischewitz wines, Concord Grape wine is suitable for Passover since it is produced using cane sugar instead of corn syrup. How many kinds of Manischewitz are there?

Today there is a whole range of Manischewitz wines which include both grape-based and berry-based drinks. In addition to the sweet Concord Grape wine there is also an even sweeter and richer wine, Extra Heavy Malaga, as well as a semi-sweet version called Medium Dry Concord. For those who want to try something different, Manischewitz produces a 100% blackberry wine as well as luscious sweet wines flavored with cherry and elderberry.

Why is Manischewitz wine so popular?

Everyone above a certain age remembers the catchy slogan "Man-O-Manischewitz, What a Wine!" that was even spoken out in space by astronaut Gene Cernan on his 1973 moonwalk. The appeal of Manischewitz wine lies in its familiarity and a certain nostalgia as well as its easy-drinking style, sweetness, and very affordable price tag. Today Manischewitz wines have truly become a part of American Jewish history and have been enjoyed at countless joyful family holidays and celebrations.

Fun Manischewitz drink recipes

Why not put a modern twist on Manischewitz wine by mixing up some fun cocktails for your Passover dinner or family gathering? Sub out vermouth for Manischewitz Concord Grape in your martini or whip up a Spritz with Aperol, sparkling wine and Manischewitz. You can also use Manischewitz to turn a Manhattan Seder-friendly by using it to replace sweet vermouth. Or make the most of Manischewitz’s sweetness by blending a big pitcher of sangria with plenty of sparkling wine and sliced oranges.
