Segal Winery: Where Tradition Meets Modernity

By Gregory Aubrey

Dating back to the 18th century, this historic family winery has continued its journey of reinventing itself to become one of Israel’s most innovative and dynamic producers. Regarded as Israel’s largest “boutique” winery, Segal crafts high-quality wines using unique production methods with grapes sourced from different vineyards in the Upper Galilee, Jerusalem Mountains, and the Judean Hills.

From the first stage of growing the grapevine to the bottling of the wine, Chief winemaker and Master of Wine Ido Lewinsohn along with a team of talented winemakers produce fantastic and unique wines, honoring the terroir and its raw materials by utilizing minimal intervention production methods, such as wild fermentation and whole cluster pressing. This natural and traditional production method emphasizes the true flavors of the grape and its aromatic compound.

Owned by Barkan Winery, Segal is often compared to its big brother, but it’s important to note that there are big differences between each. While Barkan is more international and mainstream with its production and wine distribution, Segal operates on a smaller scale and unique in its own way. One of the main differences between Barkan and Segal is that Segal is much smaller, like the boutique winery from Barkan yet we use different vineyards and winemaking teams to produce the wines, as well as the production methods,” says Ido Lewinsohn. “It’s all about minimal intervention and letting the true flavors from the wine come to life.” Let’s take a deeper look at some of Segal’s most noteworthy wines.

Segal Wines

Cabernet Sauvignon Unfiltered

Unfiltered Cabernet Sauvignon

This rustic and intense wine is one that needs no introduction. This medium-long bodied Segal Unfiltered Cabernet Sauvignon bursts of black currant and blackberry notes on the nose with a rich, textured palate reminiscent of dark forest fruit, earthy notes, and subtle mint. These wines are bottles without undergoing filtration, which helps them to retain all of the grape's delicious natural character. This is one that can be cellared and put away for a few years. Rated 90 by Wine Enthusiast.

Petit Unfiltered Cabernet Sauvignon

Opt for the finer choice in wine, like the Segal Petit Unfiltered Cabernet Sauvignon 2017. This complex and elegant wine is packed with rich aromas of dark red berries and hints of fresh mint and tobacco. Left unfiltered, the wine expresses its unique characteristics and flavor that will be a delight in your glass from start to finish.

Wild Fermentation Cabernet Sauvignon

The Segal Wild Fermentation is made using a natural fermentation process that uses wild yeast found in the grapes’ environment, producing a wine which is original, rich in tannins and aromas, and full-bodied.

Fusion Red Blend

Perhaps one of the most recognized wines in the market is the Segal Fusion Red, which became one of the largest selling wines in Israel due to its bold, fruit-forward flavor profile, smooth tannins, and consistently excellent quality matched by an incredibly affordable price. Rated 90 points by Wine Enthusiast.
