Twin Suns: West Coast Winemaking Wonders

By Dr. Kenneth Friedman

Twins Suns

Nearing a decade since its launch, Twin Suns wines has come to be known as a brand delivering on its promise of high-quality California wines at very approachable prices. Setting this lofty goal was the basis for the foundation of Twin Suns, a project fostered by Ami and Larissa Nahari of The River Wine, importers, distributors, and producers of fine wines such as Twin Suns.

The Naharis teamed with rockstar winemakers, Gabriel and Shimon Weiss, of California’s Shirah Winery, naming this new endeavor Twin Suns in honor of their own twin sons.

Growing from the original intent of producing California wines under the Twin Suns label while still remaining true to the shared goals of bringing equally great and affordable American wines to the consumer, Twin Suns now is introducing new and exciting American wine regions to the kosher consumer.

“We are now producing under the Twin Suns Reserve label a Pinot Noir in Willamette Valley, which results in a more classic, subtle Pinot Noir,” the Naharis tell me. “Willamette Valley is the ultimate region for Pinot Noir, easily rivaling Burgundy. Working with one of the area’s top winemakers, we are introducing the only kosher Willamette Valley Pinot Noir.”

Oregon’s Willamette Valley, an official American Viticultural Area (AVA) since 1983, today produces award-winning Pinot Noir which is the envy of the world. Pinot Noir is a notoriously fickle variety and Willamette Valley’s temperate environment allows the rare opportunity as a proper subclimate to achieve success and well-balanced wines.

But Twin Suns holds tight to its roots, tapping into the beauty of California winemaking, fashioning affordable offerings of buttery Chardonnay, crisp Sauvignon Blanc, lush Napa Cab, bold Santa Ynez Zin, and an assortment of other distinctive Cali reds.

Exciting new wines are already available from Twin Suns with even more coming soon.

Red, Red Wine!

Twin Suns, Reserve, Santa Ynez Valley, Zinfandel, 2019

Loved by fans of robust wines, and aged 15 months in 100% French oak, this one will not disappoint. Deep ruby red in the glass, with a pronounced nose of ripe strawberry and blackberry, sweet tobacco, and vanilla. On the palate big fruit, full-bodied, medium plus, supple tannins, medium-plus acidity. Lush and jammy. A lovely treat.

Twin Suns, Special Edition, Napa Valley, Cabernet Sauvignon, 2019

Any Cabernet Sauvignon lover knows that some of the best Cab in the world grows in Napa Valley, California. This Special Edition label hails from the Oak Knoll District AVA, a subclimate in Napa, known for its particularly cool climate allowing a long growing season which aids complexity while retaining acidity. In the glass, this wine is a deep, dark purple. Pronounced nose of dark fruit, leather, vanilla, some smoke. On the palate, a wave of big Cali Cab fruit, full-bodied, rounded tannins, and balanced acid, with a long finish.
