A Handy Guide to Wine Bottle Sizes

Choosing the right wine bottle size doesn't have to be a guessing game. Whether it's for a personal treat or hosting a large party, there's a bottle size that fits every need. Here's a comprehensive list of wine bottle sizes and the number of glasses they typically serve:

Split or Piccolo (187.5 ml):

Ideal for a single serving, this bottle size holds enough for 1 glass of wine.

Half or Demi (375 ml):

Slightly larger, this half-size ( typically 375 ml) provides about 2.5 glasses, perfect for an intimate date night.

Half-Liter or Jennie (.5 L):

At two-thirds the size of a standard wine bottle, a half liter is about 3 glasses of wine, perfect for when you're sharing a quiet evening with a friend.

Standard (750 ml):

This is the most recognized size, holding 750 ml. It's good for five glasses and is suitable for a small gathering or a couple of evenings at home.

Liter (1 L):

This is larger than the standard, with seven glasses worth of wine, for when your dinner party has just a few extra guests.

Magnum (1.5 L):

Double the standard bottle, it serves ten glasses, making it a favorite for dinner parties.

Jeroboam or Double Magnum (3 L):

With 20 glasses of wine, this size is a statement piece for special celebrations.

Rehoboam (4.5 L):

Offering 30 glasses, this bottle is chosen for larger gatherings and festive occasions.

Methuselah or Imperial (Bordeaux) (6 L):

Often reserved for significant events, this grand bottle pours 40 glasses.

Salmanazar (9 L):

Holding 60 glasses, it's perfect for weddings and large celebrations.

Balthazar (12 L):

With 80 glasses of wine, this size is impressive at any substantial gathering.

Nebuchadnezzar (15 L):

A showstopper serving 100 glasses, this bottle is the ultimate party centerpiece.

Melchior (18 L):

This rare wine bottle size will serve up 120 glasses.

Solomon (20 L):

At 130 glasses, this bottle size is as wise a choice as its namesake.

Sovereign (26 L):

Primat or Goliath (27 L):
