A Guide to Kosher Prosecco

Article Originally Published October 2018. Updated August 2023

An Introduction to Prosecco

Prosecco is a sparkling wine originating from the Veneto region in Italy and crafted mainly from the Glera grape, resulting in delightful fruity and floral aromas. Unlike Champagne, which undergoes secondary fermentation in the bottle using the traditional method, Prosecco follows the Charmat method, with the secondary fermentation occurring in large stainless steel tanks. This approach creates a lighter, fruit-forward taste profile, making Prosecco an excellent option for those seeking a vibrant and refreshing sparkling wine. Despite being generally more affordable than champagne, Prosecco's unique production process and distinct flavor characteristics don't compromise its quality.

Our most popular prosecco, Festa d' Estate, is a perfect example of a well rounded wine that can be enjoyed by a wide variety of wine drinkers.

Is Prosecco Dry or Sweet?

The sweetness level of Prosecco varies, and it can be classified into different styles. "Brut" is the driest and most common style, with minimal residual sugar. "Extra Dry" denotes a slightly sweeter version, appealing to those who enjoy a hint of sweetness. Lastly, "Dry" or "Demi-Sec" has a higher sugar content, offering a more pronounced sweetness. The labeling might seem counterintuitive, as "Dry" suggests sweet, but in the world of Prosecco, it signifies a higher sugar content.

How to Serve Prosecco

Prosecco is best served chilled, with the recommended temperature ranging from 40°F to 45°F (4°C to 7°C). This range allows the wine's delicate aromas to shine without being masked by excessive coldness.

Flute or tulip-shaped glasses are ideal for serving Prosecco. These glasses enhance the wine's effervescence by allowing the bubbles to ascend gracefully while concentrating the wine's enticing aromas.

How Long Does Prosecco Last?

Prosecco's bubbles are formed due to carbon dioxide trapped during fermentation. Once the bottle is opened, Prosecco will experience some loss of carbonation. While efforts can be made to preserve the fizz, it's best to consume Prosecco within the same day of opening to fully enjoy its effervescence. If you must save it overnight, recork the bottle tightly and refrigerate it totry to retain some of the bubbles.

As a bottle, Prosecco is not meant for aging and should be drank young, usually within 1-3 years.

What types of dishes pair well with Prosecco?

Prosecco's versatility makes it an excellent companion to various dishes. For appetizers, consider pairing it with light starters such as bruschetta or creamy brie. In the main course, it complements creamy pasta, roasted chicken, and grilled vegetables. Additionally, Prosecco pairs beautifully with fruit-based desserts, fruit tarts, and light sorbets for a sweet ending to a memorable meal.

What Makes Prosecco Kosher?

To be classified as kosher, a wine must meet specific criteria, starting with the winemaking process. The entire production process, from grape cultivation to bottling, must be under the strict supervision of a rabbi. All ingredients and winemaking equipment used must be kosher certified.
