Beyond the Glass: The Story of Bartenura's Blue Bottle Moscato

Blue bottles in winemaking are uncommon, with green and clear glass being the standard. Bartenura Moscato's choice of a blue bottle is a notable exception in this tradition.

When customers reach out to our wine team, they often say " the Moscato in the blue bottle," and we know precisely which moscato they are seeking. Bartenura Moscato has become a well-known brand, attracting a broad consumer base beyond just those shopping for Kosher wine. However, this was not always the case.

So, what is the story behind Bartenura's iconic "blue bottle?"

Historically, colored glass has been used in wine bottles to protect the wine from light. Blue glass, being rare and more expensive to produce, was not commonly used for this purpose.

As wine follows tradition, especially in Old World regions like Italy, a wine in a blue bottle, will stand out.

...and "standing out" was precisely the point.

In the early '90s, a popular Moscato from a high-end producer was on the market, sold in a standard green bottle. This brand had a strong following within the Kosher consumer market. Royal Wine Corp., owner of the international Bartenura brand, aimed to strategically capture a share of this market.

Jay Buchsbaum, Executive VP of Royal Wine, explained, "We aimed to enter that market but wanted our product to stand out. Therefore, we chose a blue bottle to differentiate our kosher moscato from the other successful brands. Interestingly, this unique branding, especially the blue bottle, caught the attention of a broader audience than we initially expected."

The journey of Bartenura's Blue Bottle showcases how Royal Wine Co. skillfully navigated the challenges of standing out in a crowded market. The choice to use a blue bottle for their kosher Moscato was strategic and aimed at making the brand distinct. This move unexpectedly paid off when the wine was featured in a rapper's video, significantly increasing its visibility.

This moment of marketing success helped the brand reach a wider audience and firmly established its place in the market.

Through thoughtful strategy and unexpected help, Bartenura managed to carve out a unique identity that resonates with consumers far and wide.
