A Pesach Wine for Every Wine Personality

The Seven Types of Wine Drinkers

When it comes to drinking wine during most of the year, there are people who abstain, those who prefer imbibing other alcoholic beverages, the occasional social drinkers, the weekend warriors, and of course the regular customers. On Passover though, most everybody has four cups of wine.

Passover is the holiday for fermented grape juice. There are many different types of wine drinkers out there and we have a wine for every one of you! Today, we are going to highlight seven different types of wine drinkers and pick the perfect wine that will fit each personality.

1. The Wine Snob

As we don’t like to think of anyone as a wine snob, and as we are all on a journey of wine, whether it’s your first bottle or your thousandth one, we are going to rename this person the Experienced/Educated Wine Drinker. This individual knows exactly what they like, and they are looking for a well-balanced, and complex wine that is not your classic, everyday wine.

Our Experienced Wine Drinker Recommendations:

Capcanes Peraj Ha’abib - This wine is not only ready to drink now, it will also age for years beautifully. It is a super complex wine with a medium plus body, and a great finish.

Jezreel Single Vineyard Argaman - Even if you are the most experienced drinker out there, Argaman is probably not a grape you are super familiar with. While we are enjoying our drinking over Pesach, try discovering something new!

2. The I-Only-Drink-On-Purim-And-Pesach Drinker

This is a fun category! For people that only drink two times out of the year, it’s ironic that these months are back to back. Ten months of being dry, and two months of drinking. After Purim this type of drinker needs something lighter for Pesach, and these two wines are just perfect.

Our Infrequent Wine Drinker Recommendations:

Binyamina Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon - While this is still an Israeli cab, Binyamina has managed to keep it on the lighter end so as not to overpower the rare wine drinkers.

Gush Etzion Spring River Dry Red - Another Israeli red that has managed to keep the wine on the lighter side. Gush Etzion has really come into their own over the last couple of vintages. Starting from 2014, these wines are starting to show lighter and easier drinking.

3. The Grape Juice Drinker

We know you’re out there, and there’s nothing to be ashamed about! For the grape juice only people, let’s go back to the lighter wines, this time with a touch of sweetness that mimics the taste you get from grape juice. Try one of the wines below for at least one of the cups this year. Who knows, maybe you’ll change your mind!

Our Grape Juice Lovers Recommendations

Zmora Cabernet Sauvignon - One of our most popular bottles, this is light on the alcohol with a touch of sweetness to it.

Contessa Annalisa Carino Semi Sweet - As the name mentions, this is a semi sweet option, still a legitimate wine, with a low alcohol content that is perfect for those very new to wine.

4. The Millennial Drinker

This category is all about the buzzwords in wine - natural, organic, extended fermentation, low phenolic nature, etc. This is not going to be your run of the mill Napa Cab or Bordeaux blend; these wines are going to be different and unique, like our millennials.

Our Millennial Recommendations

Goblet Carmenere - What is more millennial than wine from a small urban Brooklyn winery? I’ve helped with the blending there too, and this wine is amazing!

Shiran Unoaked Chardonnay - The new modern millennial chardonnay is a wine that is completely free of oak with no malolactic fermentation on it, as is the case with this Shiran wine.

5. The Red Wine Only Drinker

For all those people who only drink reds, Pesach is the holiday for you! Many have the tradition to only drink red wines at the Seder, and there are many good options to choose from.

Our Red Wine Recommendations

Gito Adom - I’m a huge fan of this boutique winery from Israel. All the wines are deep dark, full bodied and fruity, perfect during the Seder for any of the four cups.

Shiloh Secret Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon - This is a red wine drinkers dream. It is full bodied, powerful, with a long finish and full of fruit and oak. If you prefer red wine, then you will love this bottle.

6. The White Wine Only Drinker

Whether you prefer a glass of chardonnay, some prosecco, or a mineral tasting Riesling, we have all of those. Just between us, my all-time favorite grape might just be Riesling.

Our White Wine Recommendations

Casa de Cielo Chardonnay - This is a light, crisp, and refreshing chardonnay for afternoon drinking, night drinking, or really for anytime. You could also enjoy this wine outside on a hot summer day.

Hagafen Lake County White Riesling - This wine has just a touch of sweetness to it, like many Rieslings across the world, that are sweet and delicious.

7. The QPR Drinker

There’s nothing embarrassing about being QPR conscious. Truthfully, we should all be QPR people, always looking for the best value in the wines that we are purchasing, whatever the price range. There are many wines out now that provide more bang for your buck - here are two of them.

Our QPR Recommendations:

Louis Blanc Cote du Rhone Servigny - This is a wine from the Southern Rhone of France that provides astonishing depth and complexity for under $20. It’s a great showing.

Elvi Herenza Rioja - There has been much written about the amazing QPR value of this wine. And they’re right, this is a great wine, and for under $15, it’s a steal!
