Don't Pour It Out! 7 Ways to Use Up Leftover Wine

While some wine enthusiasts may not be accustomed to having leftover wine, it's not uncommon to have a few open bottles at the end of a dinner party or Shabbat meal. Rather than pouring the wine down the drain, there are several ways to use it up before it goes bad. Here are a few options:

Make a Reduction

One of the easiest ways to use leftover wine is to turn it into a reduction. Simply simmer the wine in a pan over medium heat until it has reduced by about half. This can be used as a sauce for meats, or as a base for soups and stews.

Get Cooking!

Similar to making a reduction, Wine can be used as an ingredient in many different dishes, such as coq au vin, beef bourguignon, and chicken marsala. Simply replace some of the liquid called for in the recipe with leftover wine and voila!

Alternatively, you can use it to make red wine vinegar for future recipes. Learn how here.

Make a Marinade

Wine can also be used to marinate meats, such as chicken or steak. Simply mix the wine with some oil, herbs, and spices, and marinate it overnight. You'll be ready to grill the perfect barbeque or London Broil to impress your Shabbat guests!

Freeze

Grab an ice cube tray and fill with leftover wine. Just stick it in the freezer and turn it into wine cubes, perfect for spicing up your sauces, soups and more.

Use it in Cocktails

By combining your leftover white wine with soda water and fresh fruit, you can create a delectable wine spritzer or sangria. If the wine you have leftover happens to be one of our Festa D’Estate wines, consider it a blessing and mix it into your next cocktail. Check out this video to see how you can mix Moscato with Festa D' Estate Prosecco for a refreshing spritzer.

Donate It

If you find yourself with unopened bottles leftover after a celebration and are feeling generous, check with your local synagogue or shelter to see if they accept donations of unopened wine. Doing Chessed is always in fashion, especially with wine.

Use it as a Natural Cleaner

Who knew wine could also clean your counters? Next time you spill red wine on your countertop, don't panic - just grab a bottle of white and use it to remove those pesky stains and rings. Not only will it help to lift and remove the stains, but the alcohol in the wine also has disinfecting properties that can kill common food bacteria like salmonella. It's like a two-for-one deal: you get a clean counter and a glass of wine. L’Chaim to multitasking!
